Reopening the South Sub in Edinburgh with Tram-Train Integration
Overview:
A proposal to reopen Edinburgh's South Suburban Railway as a tram-train service aims to expand the city's transport network, improve connections to underserved areas like Craigmillar and Niddrie, and support urban regeneration while reducing car dependency.
Key Features:
- Route & Stations: A 12.3 km route with 11 stations, including Gorgie, Morningside, Cameron Toll, Craigmillar, and Portobello.
- Integration: Tram-trains will link to the existing tram network at Murrayfield and travel through the Roseburn Tunnel and Western Approach Road.
- Accessibility: Stations upgraded with ramps, lifts, and dual-level platforms at Brunstane for tram and train services.
- Transit Hubs: Portobello will serve as a key hub with park-and-ride, active travel options, and links to other transport modes.
Benefits:
- Urban Development: Supports regeneration in Craigmillar and Niddrie while improving access to key locations like universities, hospitals, and Portobello beach.
- Frequent Service: A 30-minute end-to-end journey with fares matching the tram network (£2 per ride).
