Reopening the South Sub in Edinburgh with Tram-Train Integration
Overview:
A proposal to reopen Edinburgh's South Suburban Railway as a tram-train service aims to expand the city's transport network, improve connections to underserved areas like Craigmillar and Niddrie, and support urban regeneration while reducing car dependency.

Key Features:

  • Route & Stations: A 12.3 km route with 11 stations, including Gorgie, Morningside, Cameron Toll, Craigmillar, and Portobello.
  • Integration: Tram-trains will link to the existing tram network at Murrayfield and travel through the Roseburn Tunnel and Western Approach Road.
  • Accessibility: Stations upgraded with ramps, lifts, and dual-level platforms at Brunstane for tram and train services.
  • Transit Hubs: Portobello will serve as a key hub with park-and-ride, active travel options, and links to other transport modes.

Benefits:

  • Urban Development: Supports regeneration in Craigmillar and Niddrie while improving access to key locations like universities, hospitals, and Portobello beach.
  • Frequent Service: A 30-minute end-to-end journey with fares matching the tram network (£2 per ride).
  • Sustainability: Reduces congestion and car reliance by providing a dedicated, traffic-free public transport option.

Phases of Development:

  1. Initial Upgrades: Reopening the South Sub line with tram-train services and station enhancements.
Dual-Level Platforms: Expanding capacity at major stations for future train-tram integration.
Coastal Extension: Extending to Seafield and Salamander Street to create a full transit loop.
  2. Cost & Feasibility:
The project is cost-effective compared to standard tram developments and designed to support Edinburgh’s long-term goals of accessibility, sustainability, and urban growth.
  3. Coastal Extension: Extending to Seafield and Salamander Street to create a full transit loop.
